DVCAM is a Sony standard. The only difference from MiniDV is that the tape moves 1/3 faster through the transport, which supposedly cuts down on dropouts (I've seen no difference). It also includes, in addition to the standard MiniDV form factor, a larger one which allows for larger cassettes giving up to 184 min. recording time. Not all camcorders will take the larger tapes though. DVCAM tape is simply a different formulation, and will work nicely in any MiniDV camera if you want to pay more. It does come with a larger, sturdier, and very cool blue case. So DVCAM has nothing to do with picture quality. It is usually available only in higher quality cameras, which is why some folks believe that DVCAM is inherently superior, which it is not. - Ray Izumi
