Housing for TRV900 Can't Post

I just got my new camcorder, and now I need a housing. Has anyone had experience with the UnderSea video housings? I like the electronic controls and practically zero maintenance, unlike my Ikelite SLR housing.

I have Light&Motion Stingray setup for the TRV900. The outside switches use magnets and Hall Effect sensors on the inside. The lights are nice and I haven't flooded anything yet! I'm impressed overall with the engineering and the "macro zoom" optics.

This reminds me. SOny makes a very pretty housing for the TRV-900. Not the little tourist housing but a "real" one. The optics are pretty flat and not like the Light%Motion macro zoom and not all the controls are brought through, but it is quite abit cheaper. It is not distributedin the US but I have the URL of a Japanese Dive shop that will take plasteoc and ship anywhere. Have the part number here somewhere also.

TRV900 price versus the Sony PD-100 [In reply to] Can't Post

Does anybody have any idea of the price of the Sony PD100? It's about the same size as the TRV900 but takes BOTH mini-DV and DVCAM tapes. They are not sold in consumer stores here in Manila but are sold by professional equipment resellers. I understand the quality of the images of the PD100 when captured with DVCAM tape is superior to mini DV.
I will appreciate feedback from anybody who may have used this camcorder.

Re: USVH [In reply to] Can't Post

I've used a USVH housing for about 18 months now, and I quite like it. I started with a Hi8 camera but now use a TRV900. It's hard to beat the price and Warren, the owner/operator of USVH, is very easy to deal with. It's a plastic housing of course, and given it's a general TR-format camera housing there is some extra air space inside it, so you have to weight it. I don't find this to be a problem.
A huge plus IMHO is the entire back is transparent, so it's very easy to check o-rings and see if you have a leak -- one trip I pulled a very large bonehead maneuver and failed to screw down the front port completely, I still had it loosely attached from the plane ride. The housing therefore leaked rather slowly, but because I could see inside the housing I was able to detect this situation before any damage was done to the camera. I've seen two different people flood their video cameras, one was a Gates housing and the other a old Sea & Sea, in both cases an o-ring seal was compromised and there was no way to tell until the camera died. Too late.

Re: TRV900 price versus the Sony PD-100 [In reply to] Can't Post

My original intention was to film live bands & performances at my place of business. When I realized that its true potential is in outdoor & action footage. The sound & picture are crystal. Filming with DVCAM tape makes a huge difference. The VX is a consumer step in the right direction but falls short on the pro side. The 900 is not worth it for the money
Watching DVCAM in wide screen on a HDTV is mesmerizing.
The new VX will start to come down in Price with the introduction of the DSR PD100.
It does have Fire wire, memory chip card(900 TRV has floppy adapter), wide conversion lens & 3 1/2 inch flip out Screen& XLR adapter w/ phantom power

DVCAM ERROR MESSAGE HELP NEEDED [In reply to] Can't Post

I know this isn't overly relevant to this thread but I'm in a massive hurry and am not sure how to start a new thread so I'm taking a stab in the dark here in the hope that some kind soul will be able to help.

Have a DVCAM deck, DSR-2000P which has swallowed a tape, won't give it back and is giving me the error message "Error20-911". No idea what this means or how to fix it and Sony aren't being any more helpful so any ideas please let me know

Re: [X-Gordon_Cancio] TRV900 price versus the Sony PD-100 [In reply to] Can't Post

The PD100 is a great camera, and gives slightly better results than the TRV900 due to getting the best chips at the factory. Chips that are a bit out of spec but still within tolerance go into the TRV900. Or, that should be, WENT into the PD100. Neither camera is made anymore.

As to DVCAM tape, the TRV900 will use the miniDV size DVCAM cassettes no problem. DVCAM refers to the transport speed and not the tape.

I have both cameras and have never seen a single dropout or other problem with the regular Sony miniDV tapes used in either camera; you can pay three times more for DVCAM tapes, but they will not make your video any better.

BTW, the TRV900 and most Sony miniDV cameras will play back a DVCAM tape recorded at the higher transport speed of a pd100 or pd170. This is an "undocumented" feature.
