Sony VX2000 error msg Can't Post

Hi there,
Diving with a buddy of mine. I have a VX1000 and he a VX2000. Half way through the dive he had a message come up on his monitor underneath where you normally have the remaining tape time displayed. The message was: C:31,22 and another time C:31,23. The message was accompanied by the eject tape icon, the flashing upward pointing arrow.

Anyone come up with this problem before or know its meaning.

Puzzled.
Mark.

C:31:23 - Error 23 means "S reel emergency during normal rotation" according to the service manual.

In English, you are having tape transport problems. The most likely cause is dirty heads / capstans / rollers.
Try using the cleaning tape first; if that doesn't help, and you're not shy about tinkering with incredibly
delicate parts you can clean the capstans and rollers with a good quality cleaning kit (you can get these
from Radio Shack).

Go to: http://www.bealecorner.com/...0/trouble/index.html for tips on cleaning / maintenance. This is a
TRV900 site, but most everything applies to the VX200 as well.

Another tip: don't ever record a tape all the way to the end. Always leave at least two minutes of tape on
the feed reel. Tape jams almost always occur when winding the tape out to the end.

BTW, this is exactly the sort of thing that is caused by re-using tapes too many times. Relative to the cost
of acquiring footage, tapes are DIRT CHEAP. So don't try to save a few bucks by re-using tapes. I never
do so myself. All my tapes are strictly "Record once / play back for capture once". Then they go into the
archives.

If these don't help, it's time to think seriously about a new camera. The chances of getting this properly fixed,
in my experience, are about 50 / 50 depending on who is doing the work. I would NOT recommend Sony.

Hi Ray,
Thanks for the input. This may well be the case. The camera came from the equipment department of a large production concern so it may well have been hammered in the field over the past year or so. Such is life.

Thanks again,
Mark.
