Future reference.

When within an existing project: CTRL+click on the layer you want to center, then utilize the alignment
When moving a layer from one image onto another: SHIFT+drag and the layer will be centered automatically.

the easiest way, in most cases, is to CTRL+A, CTRL+X, CTRL+V.
this will usually paste the object into the center of the document.
