Another Audio acquistion solution? Can't Post

I stumbled across this yesterday and thought it may be a Zoom H4 type of solution for those with an iPod. Plug the iPod in and record via onboard stereo mics or XLR inputs. About the same size as an H4. If you are an iPod user you may be interested.

I even ran it by a few of our audio techies here and it was new to them as well. They are going to ask around on audio specialty forums and see what the scoop is on it.

Just thought I would toss it out there....more cause I discovered it before Liebergoht and Foley. SlySly

Previous ipod recorders have had less then stellar performance...being very noisy. The only issue I have with it is lack of 24 bit depth recording and no phantom capability unless it is AC powered...

It may not have 24 bit recording capability but for 95% of us out there we stay with 16bit anyway. Thats plenty for my needs. I don't know how great an item it will be but it was an idea that may fit some peoples workflows.

Yeah but still, $200 for this thing? Wouldn't an H2 do a better job for the same price?

It may but depending on your iPod you could have way more music recorded on it. I don't have an iPod so I have no need for one but I thought I would toss it out there as another gadget possibility for some. Although this thing does have XLR input where the H2 doesn't and depending on how the limiters and stuff are built in it may be a better option than an H2 for less than the H4 if you already have an iPod.

Phil, I discovered the hard way that when the hard drive of the iPod gets fragmented, the recording device skips for a split second while it finds a new segment of the hard drive to record on. This happened with the Belkin voice recorder and I am assuming it was because the hard drive was fragmented. I cam to this conclussion because I had issue with the iPod that had music on it, but no issue with a brand iPod that was completely empty.

Yeah that makes sense. That's why I reformat my hard drive in my Edirol R-4 recorder (versus just deleting the existing files) prior to every wedding.

This is why I love the media only solution of SD card recorders, such as Edirol R-44, Edirol R09, Marantz PMD620, Tascam etc.
There are no moving parts or fragmenting of hard drives to worry about.

The only thing I tend to do is reformat each card in the recorder before each event.

Yes, good point you have about the "no moving parts" but I have to use the R4 for a couple more seasons before I can ditch it and go to the R44.

Right now the R4 offers me 40 GB of storage and I plan on using that until that hard drive no longer works.... knock on wood. Can you get 40 GB of storage on a single flash card?

Since I have the ability to have small removable SD cards, I have no need of 40GB hard drive. My modded R4 actually had 80GB 7200 hard drive in it.

I simply sold my R4 and used the money to purchase a R-44.
And I don't regret it one bit.

Hell, just the SD recordability, smaller size and lighter weight are worth it for me.
Not to mention that it seems to be using the upgraded pre amps of the R4 Pro, and you even have switchable power settings. On top of that you can use the onbaord mics and 2 channels of audio feed at the same time, as well as improved built in mics (seems to be the R09s condenser mics.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm well aware of the advantages the R44 has over the R4, but I paid $1200 for the R4 and I'm sure I'd be lucky to get half of that back for it should I be able to sell it. Then I would have to buy more SD cards. What's the biggest card you can get for it, how much does it cost, and how long will it last before having to change it out. I don't want to have to worry about changing the card out between ceremony and reception, or in the middle of the reception.
