Dolby digital Surround Sound Can't Post

Hi,

Anyone doing this routinely? Now that LE 7.1 seems to work well, I think I might try this. How would it sound on a regular stereo TV system?

Do your clients request this?

Mervin

I always render out a 2-channel ac3 file from my Vegas timeline for use in DVD-Lab. If someone gets serious, then I toss out a few Microtrak 24/96 audio recorders before the event and mix it as seperate channels in Surcode and make a true 5.1 channel DTS soundtrack.

It would be fun to do, but I wouldn't waste my time with it on a wedding video, unless the customer asked for it as part of the booking.

I don't think I even know anybody that has 5.1 in their house. I have 5.1 setup in my apartment, but have only used it a few times in the past year. I just don't watch a lot of DVD movies I guess.

I'd love to set my editing station up to 5.1, or maybe try some of those 5.1 computer headphones to see if they are accurate.

It takes to much time to do and like the others stated most folks don't have the setup for it.

You could add it to you price list but I not sure it would be picked by very many folks. If you do you better make it expensive because to do it right you are going to need to set up some mikes! :)

You are the first I hear who has attempted to do surround sound 7.1 dolby audio. Is this for wedding or event vidoes?

Hi Mervin,

Sorry to take this OT but what is the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist? I may require your services! Wink

I think he is refering to Avid Liquid 7.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1. Avid Liquid can output in 5.1. I have done this but most clients don't know the difference.

I've been doing 5.1 ever since I can remember.

Around here, its a bit of a selling feature for me (but then everyone here goes gaga when you mention hightec kit).

Cheers

Re: [RustyB] Dolby digital Surround Sound [In reply to] Can't Post

I sort of fake 5.1 if I'm in the mood and I have the audio tracks. Usually I end up with a mono audio track from the wireless mike, a mono track from a mic placed at the front of the church and a 'stereo' track from the rear camera.

I mix front and center audio from the two mono tracks and use the rear camera for ambience in the rear channels. But I've really got to be bored or just in the mood to play around with it before I'd bother.

Jeremy,

My studio is now 5.1-capable, but I need to learn more about it.
Would you be interested in doing an article or two for the VU library on how to capture audio in the field for 5.1, and how to mix for 5.1 in post?

I don't think I even know anybody that has 5.1 in their house.

And if they do, they most likely have all the speakers stacked atop one another. Laugh

What NLE are you using. Are you requiered to have a surround sound card in your computer to output 5.1 surround sound?

I'm wanting to start offering my clients surround sound as an option. I use Premiere Pro 2.0 along with the Matrox x100 editing/capture card. The Matrox X100 doesn't support surround but I can import Matrox project into a standard Premiere Pro project native project and map the audio in 5.1 surround sound. I like how Adobe Audition 2.0 maps the surround sound even better (the people from Total Training make it look simple). However apparently even if your editing your 5.1 sound in Audition for a Premiere Pro project you still have to import your Audition project back into Premiere Pro.

What I don’t understand is, how Premiere Pro exports a 5.1 wav file that can be imported into Encore to author a DVD. It appears that one has to purchase the Dolby digital Surround Sound encoder or surcode they call it for around $300.00. Am I correct in assuming one has to have this Dolby encoder to export surround sound inside Premiere Pro? The other question I have, is: Do you have to have a surround sound card to edit/output surround sound?
