Field recording questions Can't Post

We will be doing our first project of this type shortly and are looking for advice on field recording gear. Presently we have a couple of AT897 shotguns and an AT835b shotgun. I've been looking at fishpoles, windjammers, blimps, etc. and getting a bit confused. Which one of our shotgun mics would be the prefered tool? I also have Lectrosonics wireless with countryman lavs, SM58s, a Sony ECM57 condenser, a few Beyer M88s, and an Electrovoice RE20. I'm sure most of the collection isn't suited for field recording, so I'm assuming one of the shotguns is best, but then again, I don't really know. We plan on using our Edirol R4 for recording with a feed to the camera for post production syncing. Any recommendations or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Will the shotguns be used indoor or outdoors?

We will be needing to do both outdoors and indoors. I'm mainly concerned with the outdoor setup in regards to wind. Suggestions for both are welcome.

Thank you. Yes, my wife and I are lifelong professional musicians, but have been phasing out of it as our full time career the past 9+ years. We've been making video our main career, but still have a large equipment arsenal we use for audio rental as well as our own performances.

Jan most of your mics are fine for ourdoor usage and I don't think you need to change a thing.

But for indoor recording I would recommend looking into some hyper-cardiod or Super hyper cardioid mics. As these should gve you the cleanest signal pickup with less of a worry about reflective audio back to the mic.

I am a fan of the Rode mics, although there are some who are not so much.
For good affordable card mics take a look into the Rode NT5's or Studio Projects C4's.
Or for a real step up in quality and price price look into the Beyerdynamic MC930 or Schoeps CMC6.

Thank you Michael for you suggestions. My experience with the Rode mics is limited, but impressive none the less. We record string quartets and small ensembles with the NT4 with great results. I'll check out your suggestions and see what fits in the budget.

We'll have an active mic on cam with the channel on the cam being fed a signal from the R-4 mainly for backup and sync in post. I prefer not to use a hand held due to visual distraction. Depending on the situation, I may consider a lav. Ours are very small Countryman lavs, but ideally I'd prefer the video imagery to be clean and void of mics.

Jan-Arden,
So have you been eyeing the R44?

It certainly got my attention at the Video 08 trade show. I wish I could justify it, but the R-4 fills our needs quite nicely.

Re: [Brackish] Field recording questions [In reply to] Can't Post

The actual interviews will be either standing or sitting. The activity shots will not have live dialog. We have yet to meet for the planning/storyboarding as yet. I'm thinking only one person at a time will be in an on camera interview. Good audio is the goal. The emotion may carry the overall message, but I'm going for the best audio I can get. The client is deciding the questions and general flow of the interviews. This project is in the very early stages, but I need to know what I can bring to the table so I feel comfortable with the planning of this project.

Hi Mark,
No I didn't. I attended the one last year by Darrel and ended up getting the R-4 which has been great. There are advantages to the R44, but I would have to sell the R-4 at a good price. Now with the price of the R-4 down, it just isn't in the cards.

So did I...we probably saw each other and didn't know it.... I also bought an R4 after that presentation and have been in awe of it use in this genre. However, There are some features of the R44 that are so tempting that I had pre-ordered one and will probably get another :-)

It does have some very tempting features which have my attention. I'm not ruling it out, but as mentioned prior, I would have to get a fairly good price on my R4 to make it happen.

Re: [Jan-Arden] Field recording questions [In reply to] Can't Post

I just sold my Bussman modded R4 to finance the purchase of a R44. I got this Bussman mod R4 for a very good price off of another forum, and it has worked flawlessly. I sold it for a little less than what I purchased it for, so I'm happy with that.
Going to place an order with Sweetwater in a few weeks. I'm going to love teh fact that it takes AA batteries instead of 9v. And also am looking forward to the smaller/lighter form factor, independent channel recording, and of course SD recordability.

Although I was at Video 07 I didn't attend Darrel's seminar. However, I did later purchase the MP3's of all the seminars and listened to Darrel's several times. That along with talking with Mark and Michael I decided I just had to have one. So around Aug of last year I finally saved up enough to purchase it. It's been one of the best purchased I've made in a long time. I just love the R-4! I record all of my ceremonies and receptions with it!
