Edirol R44 Users Information Can't Post

I will be adding to this thread (as other are welcome/encouraged to do the same)

Pulled my new R44 out of the box...wow this baby is small (as compared to my R4). My initial aesthetic assessment: Like the new black look/feel over the R4. The OLED display, now becoming the standard on new designs, is another big step-up...although pretty small in size, you can see it at a much greater distance than the older display on the R4.

Big change for me is the new gain control now by a combo level knob. The sensitivity dial (outside of the knob) is set in 11 incremental steps; +4, -2, -8, -14, -20, -26, -32, -38, -44, -50 and -56 dbu. The level dial (inside of the knob) goes from negative infinity to +8dB with the central position at 0dB. You set each channels individual sensitivity, and then fine tune it with the channel's level dial. For those who have big/fat fingers (lucky not me), you may have to practice this. Although I haven't got a chance to test all of this out, I suspect if one chooses to mic a PA stack, you may be able to use microphones without the need of any attenuation (at the mic or inline), but rather simply dial in the amount of sensitivity.

The new peak hold feature is a big plus up over the R4 as it is much easier to tell where your peaks are running at. On the R4 it was a bit difficult to visually see the levels when they got close to 6dB/3dB.

The big gain though for me is the ability to record from the internal mics and have the use of the analog inputs for two additional mics. This allows me a bit more flexibility in recording setups.

Some AA battery testing (48kHz/24bit, 4channels with phantom) I got about two hours of recording time. Without phantom power, the record times move out to 3.5 hours....

edit 30 April...Not all SDHC cards will work with the R44 (as manufacture's architecture varies). I have found (and blessed by Edirol), the San Disk 8gb card works great in the machine and I found them at amazon for approx. $30 a piece
http://www.amazon.com/...B000UZL0YUB0018BOLIC

edit 8 nov 08: Although this one sweet piece of equipment, the onboard mics are junk. If you want a recorder to simply drop in place with minimal fuss (and no external mics)...use the Zoom H2 Sly.

Edit 28 Sep 09....been awhile since I've updated this...but wanted to add this: If you happen to be recording on AA batteries (alone) and they die, you will need to use the program VLC to recover that last segment.

You previously had mentioned getting 2 hours with AA batteries. Were
those alkaline batteries you had used for the 2 hours?

Mark quick question on battery time.
Since you are running 2 Rode M3's then why do you need to run phantom on those. As the M3 (like my NT3) runs on both 9v battery or phantom power?
Just curious as I will receive my R-44 in a day or two from B&H and will most likely run my Rode NT5s (48v)/NT3 (battery or 48v)/and AT822 (battery) mics on it. I could easily run my Tekkeon battery and not worry about it.

Also, have you found a bag yet to use with the R-44. I sold my Petrol Bag along with my R4, as it would have been too large for it.

Mark,
I have a petrol bag that I used for a SoundDevices MixPre. The R44 should fit perfectly, but I won't be able to easily access the top features. The petrol bags are awesome for configuring though.

On another note I purchased a bunch of powermax rechargeables that I will be trying out once I receive the charger on wed. I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: [Mark Foley] Edirol R44 Users Information [In reply to] Can't Post

Believe it or not, I was asked to do some voiceover work as a part of a non-profit production I'm doing.

I did the recording in my booth in my basement. Same mic I used for all vocal recordings through a Mackie Mixer to my Maudio 44 to the computer.

The recording off of the Edirol was audibly cleaner.

Now I know there are lots of places to introduce noise in the old set up, but man, I'll be using the Edirol from now on.

Cool...Edirol put some great pre-amps in the R44...even the hard-nosed guys on the tapers forum are surprised at how a box stock R44 performs....

Re: [Mark Foley] Edirol R44 Users Information [In reply to] Can't Post

Does the R44 stay in sync with tape?

In the long run I think the recorder would be overkill for my business, but dang ... I would be very pleased to find some kind of recording unit for stage productions. Right now running a snake back to a mixer and to my camera would be the best/economical solution, but my back would never be able to take the abuse.

I wonder if I could set this in the center and use to additional mics on stage right and stage left to get a good recording or if all mics would have to be the same.

Although not 100% as it is not a timecode master/slave device...pretty darn near close. No need to match mics as you have a wide latitude of level adjustment for the input signal. Connect the mics to the inputs and connect a wireless transmitter to the RCA outs/your receiver on the camera and leave the darn snake at home :-)
