audio for dance recital Can't Post

I do the video and dvd sales for our local dance school and would like to improve the audio. I film with two vx2100's ( no HD yet ) and have been recording the show from the soundboard with an iRiver and using the on camera sound as a mix. I have been searching for a camera mounted mic to improve the on camera audio which has been acceptable. I have searched the forum and some others but have not found the info I need, some suggest a shotgun and others a super-cardioid and etc. The auditorium is fairly large with good acoustics and I shoot from the balcony. Any suggestions for a medium to low priced mic that would improve the on camera audio.

Hi James

We to do a lot of dance recital/pageant video's using VX/PD cams as well. On cam audio is tough, especially when your in the balcony as you tend to get a lot of unwanted audience noise. What works best for us is to plug 1 Cam into the sound board, put the second cam as close to the stage as possible and use it to pick up ambient audience reaction and stage sounds. In post I mix in the on board audio in around -15db to -18db lower than the sound board sound, just enough to give it that live feel and pick up the applause. Another route to take is to use an off cam mic close to or on the stage and send it wireless to a recorder or cam, this is good for picking up tap. I would not recommend using a shotgun mic indoors. Myself I like the AT822 connected to a cam or to a flash recorder. We usually use 3 cams at each show, but I only tend to mix the board sound with one other feed.(the better of the two)

Here is a link to a page that has a clip from a pageant we did this year. (audio is compressed for the web, but overall not bad)

Best of luck
Ben

Thanks Ben for the great info, I guess I have been handling the audio about the same except I need a mic close to the stage. I have had a lot of audience noise from the balcony. The AT822 wireless to a camera would work great for me. would you happen to know if the AT822 would work with a sennheiser G2 100 transmitter.

The audio on the pageant clip was great.

James

I'm not sure now if the AT822 would work well with the G2, It has a stereo output and the G2 input is mono I believe. The AT822 comes with a cable that splits the stereo signal in to two mono signals, as well as an XLR to stereo 3.5 inch cable. It plugs into camera's and flash recorders well that have the stereo mini plug.

James,
I would highly suggest getting a Shure SM58 (industry standard)...they are rock solid/reliable and have been used in the recording and broadcast world for years...and they are pretty darn cheap (around a 100 bucks). I noticed this year at both the Republican and Democrat National Conventions...they were using (as others have done for years) a twin pair of SM58s at the podium.

Mark ... so you would just put an SM-58 at the speaker?

Not necessarily...as Ben correctly pointed out, you want to capture ambient audience reaction and stage sounds..and want to get the mic closest, as possible to that source. You are/should already be pulling a direct source from the soundboard. However, If you have additional mics/recorders, by all means set one by a the PA. Good rule of thumb - if you have the capabability to capture a sound source...do it.... The diversity of sources in post will give you more options/more robust final sound track

Mark

Those Shure SM57's look like a great all purpose mic, and you can't beat the price!
I just ordered one for myself, thanks for the tip.

You won't regret that purchase...they'll last forever...work equally great for vocal and instrument use. If you have some means of attenuation either inline or at the recorder, will work capturing PA also.

Hmmmm. You know what's weird ... When I watched those Conventions
on TV there was only one mic at the podium. And it wasn't an
SM57. Maybe you were there in person and had a different view of
the podiums than what we got at home.

The twin pair of 57s have been used since Kennedy days I believe....that is where they got their fame from....
