iRiver setting for ambiant - for tomorrow Can't Post

I hope someone can answer this before the end of the day.

Tomorrow I'm doing a reception with a live band ... somewhat uncommon around here. I do not have any desire to attempt to take a feed. All I want to do is set my iRiver (890) with a Giant Squid mic in the back of the room and let it record. I realize it will depend on the size of the room, but is there a "general" level that should be somewhat safe?

I think I've got mine set at 47 for voice. ... just wondered if I needed to be at 25 to 28 maybe?

I haven't used my iRiver in over a year, so I spent most of last night looking over everything again to try and get reacquainted.

Thanks ~

I would leave it as is..since it will be so far from the sound source. If you drop the record level much further, you risk losing much information (fall below the noise floor of the unit)

Thanks Mark. I've found for my needs in these types of situations the vx2000 usually gets what I want, so the iRiver is just a bit of a backup.

I wouldn't get my hopes up for much of a capture with this process...however, it could be used as background layers for the main audio. Probably will have to add heavy low-end EQ in post to break from the hollow sound you'll probably get...good luck

Way late for advice hope all went well but here are my thoughts anyway. For reception with live bands I always try and get a live feed because many times they do the toasts through the same sound system and it works well for that. Rusty has a way to put a mic directly in front of a speaker with an iriver. Search Rusty mic iriver and you will find his suggestions.
