Recommended miniDV Cam For Playback Can't Post

Wanting to conserve my XL1s I'm looking for another lower priced cam for playback to my computer (ha, when I get the whole firewire thing working).

I might also want to use this smaller cam for "in car" shots so it would be good if it has a remote.

Someone already recommended the Panasonic PV-DV102 but I'm not seeing alot of those available.

Any other makers/models you would recommend?

Thanks!

Ken

Virtually any miniDV cam will work, I believe they all have basic machine control capabilies.

We were using a Canon ZR-40 for this until we got a deck. It worked fine. You should be able to score an equivalent current model for $200-300 now days. The bonus is that those little Canons are pretty good outside - my sis-in-law got a ZR1-100 and her outside footage is very nice.

Thanks RV (a bunch).

I went to a testing session last night for the same car shown in that still pic in the other thread and I'm really seeing how valuable video is as an immediate feedback device for suspension tuning. They made some new 4-Link adjustments and being able to see what the car does at launch in detail with a car this fast (sub 1 second 60 times) is for the most part is only possible with a good quality video play back. Which is making the problem I'm having getting the digital info from the camera to the computer even more frustrating.

I guess it might be a no brainer that any miniDV will do but being as new as I am, I thought there may be some compelling reason to choose one model over another.

I'm going to see if I can touch base with some local pro vid equipment repair places which are few around here, today and see if I can isolate the problem to either the camera or the computer setup.

Thanks again,

Ken

Side note: Coincidentally, the first ZR40 I looked at on eBay had only one problem; " Beware: You cannot transfer your video to your computer using IE 1394 (FireWire) port. If you are planning to do everything but connect this camcorder to your computer, bid with confidence."

Seems this problem will be my first "devil to deal with" in my fledgling video career.

I understand your frustration, Ken... you're undertaking two pretty tough projects at the same time, getting into video at a serious level on a budget is tough, and developing serious race cars is difficult no matter what the budget. BTW, both are a lot easier if you keep them subjective - then your computer is the best and your car is the fastest. Conversely, objectivity is required to win outside the confines of your mind.

I don't know if the eBay ad was talking about that specific ZR or if there is a problem with certain PC configurations. If it's the later, I'm betting it's limited, since I've never heard that comment from any competent video guy, no matter the platform. I do recall there was once a need for a capture offset in older FCP versions with certain Canon models. It never affected us.

Also remember that I'll always shoot straight with you, but I'm limited to what I know. I have like 35 years in computers overall, but I've been a Mac guy for the last half of that. My PC knowledge is limited to what I've learned from others who use them and what I read. Likewise with the car stuff - I'm willing to bet that the whole concept of head work has changed since I last lusted for titanium valves in my W-port aluminum heads...

This next comment may draw some flames from other readers; but I believe (from racing) that if you only do what the other guys do, you'll never go any faster than they do, so here goes:

Our first shot at making a video was my wife's idea. She borrowed a 4 year old Sonny miniDV and shot a reel, then plugged it into an iMac without a clue what to do next but launch iMovie. It captured and she cut it up (quite nicely) and got the bug. Virtually everything since then the same kind of scenario - I think it's because Macs tend to do what they're supposed to do and have pretty good support when they don't. I believe that the foundation for this is in the same folks making the hardware, OS, and software, and the "limited flexibility" (read this as "it's harder to screw it up") of a Mac. It's like buying a well engineered rebuild kit - chances are, the oil pump is correct and the valve spring values are what you need. If you're not heavily invested in your current system, you might want to consider switching to a Mac. The one thing I can tell you for sure is that Apple knows where they're going and how to get there. I always thought Roots-style superchargers ruled until I figured out what Whipple was up to, then it became clear why NHRA wouldn't allow them in Fuel classes - just too powerful. Sometimes, the little guy is right.

BTW, where's "local"?

Thanks again, I should have made it clear that firewire problem with that camera on eBay was specific to that camera, not the make or model.

Just got back from Best Buy, I took the XL1s in to the "Geek Squad" desk and they tried hooking it up to one of their computers, no joy, they tried switching cables and other things and it still didn't work. The firewire port is bad and I'm going to send it in to Canon. I called Canon tech support and they were not sure if the LANC port and the firewire port are on the same board. We'll see.

While at BB I got a Canon ZR200 which will serve as my transfer and dubbing device and also my "in car" cam.

"Local" is Charleston, SC.

Since I have so many "PC" parts laying around it would be much easier for me to put together another machine for video editing. I've got the cases, power supplies, hard drives, about the only thing I'll buy will be the mobo, CPU and memory, probably go with an Athlon 64.
