newbie- just got the XL1- couple questions Can't Post

Just bought a Canon XL1 and want to know how to transfer data/video/pictures to my pc. I just bought a dual PCI card with firewire and USB. If there's documentation or tips/tricks I'm not adverse to reading. What kind of software do I need? (I have Avid, though I've never used it) I want to film in the Frame mode to grab some pics- I think that's the best way.

Also, what's the mode to film in to give the best appearance for a real film?

thanks in advance.

For the first question, just connect the camera to the computer via firewire, put the camera in VTR mode, and start your capture program on the computer (you don't say what NLE you're using).

For the second part, that's a much tougher question. If you record in progressive mode, you'll lose some resolution. You might be better off just recording standard and adding film-look type changes in post. You'll just need to experiment until you find a procedure/result you like.

Non Linear Editor such as Vegas, Premiere, Avid, FCP, etc...

All of the above will come with their own capture program. A good alternate capture program for a PC is Scenalyzer Live.

To enhance EDWARDS NLE description. It gives you the ability to layer tracks, instead of one single video track and one single audio track (WIN's MOVIE MAKER, CAMTASIA, etc).
