BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE P2 - A productions journal with photos from the movie Short Track Can't Post

Just thought some people might be interested in our experiences with P2 workflow.

Interesting...the images look real nice.

So, how many labels did you lose inside the cam before you came up with the final tip? Wink

Very nice, Chris!
We too, learned the hard way about placing even thin mailing labels on our P2's.

Thanks Postal,

We only lost one, we did not place the labels on the P2s, but we mentioned to the rental house what happened and they are not going to place label stickers on the P2s anymore.

chris

Hey Douglas,

How are you? It does suck to learn the hard way, but if you're gonna try out new technology, it seems like you often have to learn the hard way :) P2 is indeed a interesting format with some great features, but in the end it is not the "Holy Grail". Still a great camera for the price point.

Have you noticed it's compression problems in the reds?

We've noticed compression problems with red colors whether it's DVCPro HD, DV, or MPEG. Red is just in that range of difficult color to compress. The HVX seems slightly more susceptible, but you can always trim that down in the cam. JVC does very, very well with controlling this as does Sony. That's why we use the really bright reds against the contrasted whites and blacks when I'm showing the Z1 and Canon cams on our tours, because they've given us great tools to avoid trouble.

As far as the labels, I wish they'd have put a scribblestrip either on the end or bottom of the P2 cards. Maybe future versions? With the recent Micron buyout, the cost of these cards should start dropping pretty fast.
