HD questions Can't Post

Hey everyone,

I am starting to get into filming weddings (I am about to start shooting with a professional). I also make short movies quite frequently and am looking to upgrade from my current GL2, (I usually shoot on a Sony HDR-FX1). I want to upgrade to the JVC HD100. When I shoot with the HDR I only shoot in DV because I am completely lost when it comes to HD.

So…I have a huge list of things regarding HD I am confused about, sorry if it is too long.

First off,
1- I know the HD100 can shoot in multiple formats so I am wondering what the difference is between all of these. IE- 720p, 60p, 1080i, SD60p, 30 fps, 60i. What is the difference between all of those? (Each of those are terms I have encountered when reading some of the threads, so if any are not real etc, I apologize).

2- What is 4:2:2 and 4:2:0, what is the difference between those?

3- What is SSF?

4- I am confused on the whole slow-mo deal because I don’t’ really understand of these terms otherwise I wouldn’t ask this. Will HD footage be able to reduced in speed for slow motion?

5- Would it be smart to buy an external recorder for it? Or buy something like the BR-HD50U?

5- I have Adobe Premiere PRO 2.0, I know this can edit HD but what is the deal with programs like Aspect, Connect, and HDV x DV. Or things like AJA, actually video cards. Or can I just capture HDV footage to my computer via fire wire without any additional programs.

If anyone knows of any links that just explain HD overall and what these different formats do etc, It would be much appreciated.

If you can, e-mail me at lgkost@gmail.com as well.

Thanks everyone, I hope I can get some of my questions answered.

There's a book out co-authored by Douglas SpottedEagle about HDV. I don't remember the title off hand, but it is really good. You should get it and read it cover to cover before doing anything. What you're asking is a TON of information. And I don't think posts with various opinions about it would do justice to you need for solid info.

Oh, it's "HDV, What You Need To Know" and can be found here:

Thanks for that link! I will probably purchase that. But as far as editing goes, would you recommend getting the Vegas 6 bundle? And then buying Connect HD along with it? I would really like to use Premier Pro 2.0 but I have heard people saying bad things about it, can anyone clarify this? Also, are there any programs similar to Aspect that aren't as expensive for Premiere Pro, because if there is then I'm deffinately getting that.

Don't know, I'm a Final Cut Pro 5 trainer, so I'm biased. I have a list of folks who went from PPro to FCP5 and love it. I'm sure some PPro trainer has a list going the other way, too. I'm just starting to do HD on FCP and love it. Just like DV, but much nicer quality images.

What NLE you use I think requires a lot of homework and a very clear understanding of the type of video editing you'll be doing. Wedding/event, industrial, Indie film, it all makes a difference. But there's no one top dog HD editor out there. If there were, we'd all be using it. So do a LOT of homework, weigh the pros and cons of each, decide what you want to live with.

Keep doing that research.
Rent an HD100 for a couple of days, if you can.
One thing: JVC's HDV format will not talk to Sony's...so you can't mix camcorders and decks among manufacturers. JVC's flavor of HDV is 720p, and Sony's is 1080i. There are some implications there for fast movement and for slow motion effects, but I couldn't tell you for sure which one is actually "better"; it depends a lot on your shooting style and your personal preference. I will say that, as sexy as the HD100 is, it's a lot more expensive to implement a full HDV solution with JVC equipment than with Sony. The cost of batteries is higher, and you may find you want to upgrade to a much more expensive lens.

Re: [videobear] HD questions [In reply to] Can't Post

I shot some HDV footage on the Sony, Canon and JVC cameras last week, and it looks like I may be able to play all three tapes on my FX1. I haven't fully confirmed the ability to capture to the computer this way, but they seem to be playing fine to the FX1 LCD screen.
