You should be able to shoot, play back, and capture HDV footage from pretty much any manufactured camera and be alright. As long as you shoot in interlaced 1080i on mini DV tape (this is what makes it HDV and not HD or ADVC). You will start running into problems if you start shooting in 24P (or progressive in general). Especially if you shoot with cameras from different manufacturers (Sony, Canon). As they record progressive differently. However if you stay with the same manufacturer (Canon), then you could shoot 24F with a A1 and still capture progressive 24F with your HV20.
I ask because I am thinking about buying a HV20 to start playing around with HDV in the off season. But if I decide to go with Sony HDV cams, can I still use the Canon HV20 as a capture deck/back-up/balcony cam?
