Sony Z1 - glare from fiter and wide angle lens spots Can't Post

Has anyone else run into these problems?

My Sony Z1U has a UV filter attached to protect the lens. When I'm in a church that has glass doors all around (lots of outdoor light coming in), I'm seeing what appears to be the reflection of the lens on the inside of the filter even after the filter has been cleaned or replaced with a brand new one - any way to minimize the glare in camera? I know one solution would be to remove the UV protector, but I'm just paranoid about scratching the lens of $5000 camera. Because of the layout of the church, I am forced to shoot the ceremony from a fixed position and always get this reflection.

I also have the
Sony wide angle lens for this camera, and have noticed a few tiny spots on the front of the lens that I can't clean off - it's almost as if the spots are in the coating of the lens. I've only had this lens for about a year, and used it less than half that time so it's still pretty new. Since there is no way to mount a protective filter on the wide angle lens, does this mean I'll have to spring for another $500 to replace this thing? Anyone else have any ideas?

I have UV filters on all of my cameras and on occasion have seen the same type of reflections that you are describing. Mine happened on the spot and I couldn't do anything about it because of the action that I would have missed. For this one event I think the easiest thing to do is just take the UV filter off to get through the shoot. If you don't want to do that, the other thing that might help is to raise the camera and then tilt down more. This will give a keystone type effect that might get rid of the glare, but you may not like the shot that you get so you'll have to experiment.

Good Luck,

You can purchase a clear filter for your Z1. I use one made by Tiffen.

I think the problem is WITH a clear filter.

Tiffen is OK, but not the best. Possibly a Hoya or B+W multicoated filter would minimize the reflections.

I was going to get the B+W but they were a bit more. I do have the coated Tiffen.

I have this same glare problem with my VX2000s and PD-170, so I no longer use UV filters and generally keep a WA lens on the cams at all times ... as for the WA lens problem you're talking about, I have no experience with that, sorry.

Tried swapping the filter out with a Tiffen Uncoated Clear Filter - seemed to have less reflection of the lens
on the last wedding I shot in that particular church ( But then again, the weather wasn't so great that day, so I'll have to try it on a sunny day.)

Still haven't figured out these spots on the wide angle lens though. Cleaned it carefully multiple times, but those spots are there to stay. Looks like I'll have to drop some more money on another wide angle. Are you Z1 users using the Sony Wide Angle or third party lens? I wonder if I'll have better luck quality wise with a different brand ( maybe Canon?).

Thanks for the responses so far

Todd
