Sony broadcast quality HD cameras vs Flip HD Can't Post

I have a client that wants to know why someone would pay for a broadcast quality HD camera if they could purchase a flip HD camera for so much less. It is quite obvious to me and I can begin to tell them. I thought perhaps if any of you knew of a resource on-line that I could point them to in order to back me up or if one of you could give a few reasons why.

I film dance, so the obvious reasons are the ability to have all the settings on manual especially for light levels.

I would appreciate it.

Thank you!

Just pull up the specs for the Flip camera and show why a typical professional camera is so much better. Include 1 small chip versus 3 larger chips, resolutions of 1440 or 1920 by 1080 versus 1280 by 720, ability to shoot at 60 fps for better motion, better compression codecs with more information (requiring higher processing rates), better connectivity (HDMI, firewire), longer battery run time, better microphones plus input for other mics or house feed, place to put a light if needed, etc, etc, etc.

Why does a professional photographer not use a disposable Kodak camera? It's so much less expensive.

Thank you! I feel ridiculous even posting the post because it is so obvious and in fact I was almost in shock that I was asked the question. I apprecaite you responding.

Tell them good luck with that and that you are no longer available on their date. Laugh j/k

That's okay, it was a VU'er who posted their excitement here about the Flip a while back..."it's HD, it might make a good backup camera"...Laugh

It's the same logic used by shoppers when buying still cams....why buy an expensive 8mp SLR when you can get an 8mp cellphone camera for 1/10th the cost and also use it to forward stupid email jokes and idiotic Twitter comments to your friends??? Laugh

The thought process is that they're both HD. What they don't understand are the significant differences in the codecs, bitrates, lenses, imagers, processing.
The Flip and Webbie are a lot closer to a cell phone than they are to a Z7 or similar.
The Flip uses H.264 but not an AVCHD encoder, and is a terrible quality at its low bitrate. Same with the Webbie. These have crappy lenses, 1/8 imagers, and the encoders aren't tweaked for much.

It's the old saw...you get what you pay for. You can't buy a Ferrari for the price of a Yugo.

Try asking them why anyone would hire professional dancers instead of just watching "Dancing with the Stars" on TV...
