FCP version 7 - What New Features do YOU like? Can't Post

Okay, some are happy, some are mad that version 7 didn't have more updated features then it does, and I can agree there are still a lot of features that I've been missing in FCP that I was use to in Premiere Pro, and are still missing in FCP v7 so I thought I'd start a thread to discuss the new features and what has changed for the better. You have to admit, there are some changes that will improve our quality of editing, so let's hear about the ones you are thankful for.

I'll start off with a little one that isn't mentioned anywhere, it's just new or improved from version 6 and that is the fact that you can now move a marker forward or backwards simply by dragging it. You must hold down the command key when you drag, but thats not an issue. Just a little something that I discovered. Correct me if Im wrong, but you couldn't do that in version 6 could you?

Close all other tabs as once [In reply to] Can't Post

You know how when you have like 24 sequences open in the timeline and canvas at one time and you have to close them one at a time? Well now with V7 you can control click a tab (right click) and chose to close all other tabs. 'What a time savor. That's something that I've been missing that Premiere Pro had.

Another nice feature that I've been missing that's in Premiere Pro, was when you choose to delete a section of your timeline the timeline markers would also ripple delete. Well they will do that now in FCP v7..

Also since Im on the subject of markers, not only do we now have different color markers in v7 (we didn't have that in v.6 did we?) you can choose to turn off all markers of a certain color. Say for example you use yellow markers for beat markers to your music, you can now turn them off and back on when you desire. They aren't deleted, just hidden. That's pretty cool!

I'm sorry, anyone feel free to just step right in at any time here... Crazy

IMHO not ground-breaking improvements but cool. I haven't updated yet. I'm going to wait a while. The new marker functionality sounds awesome- especially the ability to drag and move them. I don't know why it took them this long to allow you to do that?!

Love the ability to share sequences via iChat.
Used this feature with out of town couple last week to have them "sign off" on an edit. Client has to have a Mac and an AIM account. Simple to use. Quality of image and frame rate serve the turn...

Best,

Whit

Hey Whit, I've been thinking about the same thing, but did you client have an AIM account, or a Mac accept? I've had trouble in the past usage video chat with another user on a PC with a regular AIM account. Have only had good luck with another Mac.

Client had AIM account and a Mac. Believe this requires iChat to work. Will see if I can't do a test with a PC in the next few weeks.

Cheers,

Whit

Looking to upgrade to Snow Leopard and FCS7 shortly. Looking forward to some of the new goodies! PS I just switched to an all wireless setup for my mouse/keyboard. This wireless keyboard is a bit awkward to type on (a tiny bit smaller) but the new mouse is great- ie Magic Mouse!

Re: [GmElliott] FCP version 7 - What New Features do YOU like? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Glen

What Coded are you capturing in HDV or ProRes? I capture in ProRes 422. always have from day 1 after I stated capturing and editing HD. Just be aware, if you do capture in ProRes there is a bug where the OS identifies your ProRes Video Files as text files. (If you look tat the files in finder, they won't have an extension (they never have, even before SN and FCP7. However, finder will identify your video files as document files, and no other program will recognize your ProRes Files, not Color, Motion or even FC if you move the files. The workaround is to add the .mov file extension to all of your ProRes Captured Video Files. Now you don't want to do that manually, ProRes creates a new file overtime you start and stop the camera, and it does it from the begging to the end of the tape unless you chose not to capture the whole tape. I use Adobe Bridge, it takes care of adding the .mov extension in a batch operation very quickly. If you don't have Bride, there are other free programs that do this. If you don't capture in ProRes, skip the rest of this paragraph and to to the next one. LOL

You'll love all of the new features in FCP 7. Multi-color tabs are very useful as well as the new speed tool. It nice to have your markers ripple edit with clips in your timeline. You can turn this new feature off if you wish. The TimeCode overlay is nice. I use it so my clients can get a better feel of the live edit as they monitor my studio cams.

For what it's worth, I first upgraded my FCP and later upgraded the OS after it cam out, and I didn't have a bit of problems. If you need any assistance, I've been keeping up with most issues, but again for me, I really haven't had an problems. The biggest was with my PCIe eSata controller card, I had to buy a new one, but I was having problems with that old card from day one, so it's not SL's fault really.
