Re-edit of a school promo Can't Post

Hi there,

We did a promo DVD for a local school a few years ago. They recently contacted us again to update some of the footage. Problem is we didn't keep the original project files as I didn't think we would need them again. I do luckily have the promo on DVD as I always keep it, more for my own sake to show prospective new clients. I can rip the DVD and edit that way this time.

Question I have is this, for the future, what is the best way to save a project with a view to modifying it periodically? I know there is a print to tape function and I have used that before but that is just the complete timeline out to one video track and a stereo audio (is that right?).

Thanks you all in advance.
Sean.

First of all I edit on a PC, so some of this may not apply to Macs. On my PC I can create "virtual" drives, so I keep all the media for one project in one folder and mount the "virtual" drive as necessary. I bought an external drive that I use just for archive material, so I just move the "School Promo" folder to the archive drive. Additionally, I backup my Avid project files on a thumb drive. If my archive drive failed or I didn't archive the captured footage (and I still had the original tapes) I could batch capture the footage from my project files.

Good luck,

Steve

There are a few ways to back-up projects.

While keeping all the files is a good idea you are going to start to have a huge stack of hard drives laying around. These will need to be spun up every once in a awhile to make sure they do not fail from non-use. There is a bare hard drive dock that would make this system easier to do. If you are just doing a few productions a year and don't mind spending a little extra on hard drive space, this would be a good way to go.

The workflow I use is to export the project as an XML file when I am finished with it. This way as long as I have the source footage on tape I can recapture and I have the project just as before. I have only had to do this once but it worked great. I also back up to tape using the Print to Tape function, of course this is not editable (obviously) if it is re-captured.
