Trying to Use Final Cut Pro 5 and without Studio Can't Post

I need advice and my situation is a mess so you're a saint if you are willing to help...

I bought FCP 5 in 2005 (for a great price!) but didn't use it until now and I'm using it now on a MacBook Pro I got last year (Leopard 10.5.7). I'm running into a few limitations:
  1. One problem I did fix at least to the point that I can get by is...I can finally log HDV footage through my HV20 but the only way is to use HDV Intermediate Codec on the sequence/capture presets but that doesn't even give me the OPTION of batch capturing (which is OK for me)
  2. Once I'm done editing I export my movie as a QuickTime movie and then put that into compressor but I get "Cannot submit batch: Unable to connect to background process".
  3. Even if I eventually manage to export my movie into Compressor, since I only have FCP and not Final Cut STUDIO I only seem to have iDVD to make my DVD but that seems to only work if you have an iMovie file.
So questions:
  1. How do I get compressor to work? Will deleting Compressor and reinstalling it do anything to help?
  2. I go to one-to-one's in the Apples store but they can't seem to help. They tell me to go to the web or call Apple Care. Should I be expecting more from them?
  3. Is there another option besides compressor and one that will work with iDVD? If Compressor does eventually work, will it work with iDVD?
  4. Do I simply have to upgrade to FCP 6? Should I just bite the bullet and get Final Cut Studio?
  5. I really do not have 1200 dollars for Final Cut Studio? Is it necessary? Would Final Cut Express suffice for a guy like me who's transitioning from consumer to professional videographer?
  6. ...and, on a side note, is it just my newbie-ness or do I have a right to be frustrated when I pay hundreds of dollars for something that barely works and is just software? Is it fair for Apple to charge people seven/eight hundred dollars every two or three years for the latest version of FCP?
...Any help is greatly appreciated.
