Where's the best place for advertisements? Can't Post

I'm a small start up company. I've been doing free lance work full time for a while now but developing my own business is a bit different. Ideally I would like to do mostly weddings with some corporate work. If you had a $1000 budget for advertising. Whether it went towards: expos, wedding sites, print or where ever. Where would have been the best place for your dollar? How would you divide the $1000 up? If you went with wedding sites. What are some of the features that make you decide which one to advertise with?
Thanks for any help!

Start your branding process. Get your name, logo and identity package figured out. That is all more important than advertising to start with. After you get a name and logo get your website built. This is the single most important thing you can invest in at the beginning. Make sure it have video samples on it.

A good logo and branding package and website is going to run way more than $1000 but they are important investments to do right as they are the face of your company.

If that is all in place I would seek out a wedding show. Our area has a big show and they have a huge planner/guide everyone gets with all the participants in it. THey also allow you to buy an ad in book and not be in the show. We don't do the show anymore but still keep our ad in the book. If there is a good show in the area get in there with a killer demo and booth. If you are starting out and your prices are still low you will get business at a wedding show....just don't keep your prices low for long or you will get stuck in that referral network.

The show is how we got rolling. After that advertising is hit and miss. Online places are usually no good and magazines are expensive (and don't work well). If you can find a mentor in the area that will help you with business and marketing advice. Find out what works around you. If there is a PVA around get involved and learn from everyone.

Local Search Engine Optimization. Here's an article about it

http://www.videouniversity.com/localsearch.shtml

and Kenny Stillman in the Members Forum can tell you more.

According to our newly updated book "Wedding Video For Profit"
http://www.videouniversity.com/wedbook.shtml

Make sure you use the words "your city wedding video" eg. Harrisburg Wedding Video in a sentence in your web site. If you just used those words a bunch of times without being part of a sentence, Google could penalize you for keyword stuffing. Hiring someone to optimize your web site for local searches can be a wise investment.

I'd use the $1,000 to join industry specific membership organizations in your area. This will give you access to industry professionals and target prospects in your area via networking, social events, etc. Plus, if the organizations have websites, you should be able to post a link to your website with a description of your business there. Here are a few organizations you should consider joining in your area.

1.) Wedding professionals organizations (photography, catering, etc. etc.)

2.) Chamber of Commerce (great access to local small and large business decision makers)

3.) Advertising Federation (great access to marketing and advertising decision makers)

4.) Public Relations Society of America (great access to PR and communications decision makers)

If you aren't already a member of at least one or two professional organizations that make it easier for you to connect with referral partners and/or target prospects, I'd do this first before thinking about advertising with such a low-budget. Good luck!

Re: [hifocused] Where's the best place for advertisements? [In reply to] Can't Post

Knowledge is power. Education is going to be the key to running a successful business. Here are my two suggestions:

1. Your primary goal should be to become a salesperson. You can make all the great videos you want, but if you can't present them properly nobody is going to hand you a check. Go to Amazon.com and buy a dozen books on sales, management, and motivation from people like Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, Tony Robbins, Stephen Covey and Ken Blanchard.

2. http://www.infocusvideoevent.com/ There is an old saying in sales: To be successful, just watch what successful people do, and do what they do. Spending your money on a video training event will be the best investment in "advertising" you'll ever make.

And the reason I bring up these two things instead of telling you to buy an ad in a magazine or work on your website is because this is still primarily a referral business. So if you can get your services sold to people and talk effectively your clients will become yourbiggest spokespersons for you.

You'll never find better advertising than happy clients. I could never afford to miss out on billing by attending training seminars I could not use in hopes of handing the right person a business card. Invest in happy clients... not banners.
