PD170 & LP Can't Post

Hello everyone, and thanks in advance for the help. I am faily new to this business, and have a question. I have always shot in LP on my cameras to make sure and get the whole prep and ceremony on the same tape. Also if I have a very long service I can always get it all with LP. I have never had a quality issue with shooting in LP. I am in the market for a new camera, and am looking at the PD170. Is the lack of LP not an issue for anyone? And, how does it affect the workflow? I have built alot of what I do around 90 min. of footage. Isn't this also a Major difference with the VX2100? Why hasn't ANYONE mentioned this before? Am I just too green to understand? Thanks again.

It might be nice to record more on one tape in LP rather than SP, but you don't want to do that for the mere chance of the tape breaking or dropouts. Also, some cameras and decks cannot read footage recorded in LP mode.

Straight out, spend another $3 for a second tape and film in SP with everything.

As for comparisons between the 170 and VX, search on google as there is a great comparison table of the two.

i dont think anyone should use LP to record. It affects quality. the PD records in DVCAM which is 40 mins on a 60 min tape. no one talks about this mostly because people dont use LP. If you want more fotage on a tape get some of the 80 min tapes or a HDrecorder. some other tape advise is to never mix tapes. there are wet ones and dry ones. stick with one kind(sony is best for sony). also dont record over tapes more than 2-3 times. It does wear them down. most of the difference between the PD and the VX series is control. the pds have many manual options and have built in XLR inputs. the PD170 is just the more pro version and the VX is the prosumer type. I dont know what kind of work you will be doing but they are both very good cams. just remember the PD is HDCAM so the tapes record 40 mins. I dont know if there is an option to change.

Well,
I have worked for a local company for years that shoots everything in LP. I do weddings almost exclusively. I have found that as I have been using Sony tapes, I have not had any real dropout problems or audio problems, but it seems to me to be a drawback to not even have the option to do LP. I have never known any image quality issues between the 2 formats. Maybe I'm just a prosumer at heart Unimpressed...

That is pretty much it, I think. The PD170 is designed for field work, where the environment isn't always the best. So the make it capable of DVCAM speed or normal speed for more reliability under adverse situations.

I never would shoot in LP for a wedding. You are cramming more info onto less tape.

duly noted,
I am a one man band at the moment, and If I shoot a ceremony that is more than 1 hr. (like Catholic) then I am going to need at least 1 camera on LP. I will put my backup on LP and shoot my maned camera SP...
thanks for the advice...

Just because you are a one-man band doesn't mean you can't go back and forth between cams. Unless, of course, you set the unmanned cam in a location you cannot go back to until the ceremony is over.

I'm solo and shoot with 3 cams. I move between them all and change tapes when necessary. I'm generally no more than 10 minutes at a time with one camera.

Re: [YoWoViPr] PD170 & LP [In reply to] Can't Post

Well,
I found my first issue with LP, I was editing a Love story I shot in lp with my VX2100, and I was using my Panasonic GS120 as a deck. The video would get to a certain point and lock down the computer and camera. I loaded up the tape on the vx2100 and captured everything. I see this as being a problem with LP. So, point taken. I had previously been using my GL1 as a deck for the GL1 footage and the GS120 for the GS120 footage. Now that I am moving up with the big boys in equipment (the VX2100) I need to do it right. Thanks for all the help.
