For me, the best reason for the PD170 over the VX-2100 are the XLR inputs. You may not realize the importance of them now, but when you get into shooting some weddings and events, you'll be glad you have them. With the XLR inputs, you can attach a wireless mic on one channel (for example, when mic'ing the groom for vows, mic'ing the DJ's speaker for toasts, etc.), and use the other channel to record the on-board shotgun mic, for ambient/close up audio, then mix both channels as need in your editing software. Sure, you can buy XLR adapters for the VX2100, but it's kinda dumb to use makeshift adapters when you can simply spend the extra money for the PD170....which is an AWESOME value right now for a new camera!! Also, the PD170 (last time I checked) was still shipping with a Wide Angle Adapter included, which makes it even MORE of a better deal than the VX2100. You'll want a Wide Angle Adapter when shooting with either of these cams. The PD170 is a GREAT camera, you won't be disappointed. I've shot a lot of weddings with them, in addition to the VX2000, DSR250 as well as the Canon DV/HDV cams. If you think you might be investing in a HD television (or already have) and Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player in the near future, you might consider an inexpensive HDV camera like the Sony FX7, which is what I currently use for weddings. It sucks in low light compared to the PD170, and doesn't have XLR inputs...which I miss a LOT, not to mention getting a wide angle adapter for it is a MUST. BUT, it has a 20X lens, which is awesome for weddings, and produces an amazing image in decent lighting, for not too bad a price. Good luck!!
