Pd-170 vs vx2100 Can't Post

I am going to buy my first prosumer cam. I have been doing some research which can be a little confusing. I kinda want to go with a Sony. Could someone give some pros and cons on the Pd-170 and the dvx-2100. I have found out the 170 has a B/W view finder. How big of a difference does that make? I plan on doing some weddings and events for friends a relatives. Maybe doing it as a side business. I have also heard alot of good things about the Panasonics. Your input and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Ed F.

For me, the best reason for the PD170 over the VX-2100 are the XLR inputs. You may not realize the importance of them now, but when you get into shooting some weddings and events, you'll be glad you have them. With the XLR inputs, you can attach a wireless mic on one channel (for example, when mic'ing the groom for vows, mic'ing the DJ's speaker for toasts, etc.), and use the other channel to record the on-board shotgun mic, for ambient/close up audio, then mix both channels as need in your editing software.

Sure, you can buy XLR adapters for the VX2100, but it's kinda dumb to use makeshift adapters when you can simply spend the extra money for the PD170....which is an AWESOME value right now for a new camera!!

Also, the PD170 (last time I checked) was still shipping with a Wide Angle Adapter included, which makes it even MORE of a better deal than the VX2100. You'll want a Wide Angle Adapter when shooting with either of these cams.

The PD170 is a GREAT camera, you won't be disappointed. I've shot a lot of weddings with them, in addition to the VX2000, DSR250 as well as the Canon DV/HDV cams.

If you think you might be investing in a HD television (or already have) and Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player in the near future, you might consider an inexpensive HDV camera like the Sony FX7, which is what I currently use for weddings. It sucks in low light compared to the PD170, and doesn't have XLR inputs...which I miss a LOT, not to mention getting a wide angle adapter for it is a MUST. BUT, it has a 20X lens, which is awesome for weddings, and produces an amazing image in decent lighting, for not too bad a price.

Good luck!!

What about the B/w viewfinder. How important is it to have a color VF? Also can you use mini dv tapes with it?

To be honest, I haven't used viewfinders much since camcorders started coming with LCD's. Wink The PD170/VX2100, also have a super-bright LCD that you can see easily outdoors in bright Sunlight, making the viewfinder even more useless IMHO. The "benefit" of a B&W viewfinder has never been a selling point for me, personally, with my kind of video.

Color or b/w viewfinder really doesn't
make much difference.

Yeah, you use mini-DV tapes with the PD. Some people
like to run the VX with the 60-minute tapes in LP mode, so's
you get 90 minutes of record time. [LP = long play 1.5X]

PD doesn't have LP mode so you use the 83-minute mini-DV
tapes with it.

Fletch, if you're doing it for business then PD is the way to
go over VX.

For doing stuff for friends and relatives VX is fine.
