The end of the PD170 Can't Post

I want to start shooting in widescreen, but everything about the anamorphic lens's scares me! I shoot a lot of weddings with the pd170 but need to shoot in 16:9! Is it time for a new camera?

I bought the V1U expecting to shoot my weddings with, but at receptions it's WAY TOO DARK!

What is the BEST HD, LOW LIGHT CAMERA these days to shoot events in 16:9 to look great on a 60 inch plasma??

Chris, do a search on low light HD cameras here, as this has been discussed at length and still is, as it's an ongoing thing with HD cameras and low light.

If you are a manual settings shooter then the Canon A1 will do well for you. if you are more of an automatic guy, then the Sony cameras will work better.

Until recently i would have said that the Sony FX1/Z1 was the best low light HDV camera. but the recent release of the Z7U and of course the EX1, will prove that they are the best in low light. of course they are quite a bit more money than the V1U and such.

Now as for HDV and low light, if you run manual settings you can eek out a better picture in low, light.

but if you are shooting HD footage right now I would recommend one thing...Get a dimmable on camera light to use when needed.

I still use my PD170 from time to time, for corporate shoots where they want 4X3 SD. But even when I used the PD170's/VX2100's exclusively, I still used an on camera light. it's great that the PD/VX line can almost see in the dark. But without light the image turns to mud. And video/photos need light, as it is a light based recording medium.

Unfortunately all of us who shoot events for a living can't rely on the venues for proper lighting as many think that pitch black is romantic and never hire a lighting specialist to light the venue properly. So until either venues turn up the juice of couples hire lighting designers for their weddings we have to make due with using our lighting the best we can.

Agreed, Michael. I always use my mini frezzi light at receptions, even in half way decent lighting. It just makes the picture and colors look better. The problem with the V1U is I need to turn up the mini frezzi to the point where I'm actually blinding people more than I'd like to, and then the background is usually pitch black! (which doen't happen with the pd170)

I'm looking very closely at the EX1. Is it as good as the pd170 in low light?? Thanks for the input!

Reports from the field so far, say that it is exceptional. it should be with 1/2 sensors.

lookup repots on their and other forums on the EX1. Also check over at http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/ and check out their EX1 boards.

I shoot with FX1's and the Sony HVL LBP LED light. I have been very happy with the results. As far as the background being pitch black, that's something we can't do anything about without proper backlighting by the couple or the venue. Which goes back to my original post.

Well I'm in the same boat as Chris, and afraid it might start sinking before I can save up enough $$ for a couple Z1U's So I'm seriously thinking about buying a couple FX1's here as soon as I can and make the switch to 16:9 so I will have some good demos for next year.

I've always used on camera lights at the reception and it doesn't bother me to continue using them, what I'm afraid of is the low light in some of these churches. Is that much of a problem with you Michael?

I was thinking I needed Z1's instead of the FX1's but I don't need XLR mic inputs and the chips are the same in both cams aren't they?

Michael, I was just looking at that light:

What is that lower door? Is it closed when in use? Are the side doors just barn doors?

How long does a NP-F970 last with this light?

Re: [Ron Priest] The end of the PD170 [In reply to] Can't Post

Ron the bottom door is a focus enhancer. What it does is focus the beam so you can add another 3-4 feet of light throw. It focuses the beam in a spot configuration, so the spread isn't there. But it will do good if you need to shoot across the floor and get that extra light boost you need. The top door is a diffuser, and yes the two side doors are simply barn doors.

A 970 battery should last you all night long, easily. All in all it's a great light, I love it. Might be getting a few more and sell off my PAGC6 and Varlux lights.

Hey Michael, when you have time, would you PM me with the details of why you chose the Sony FX1 over the Cannon A1? Are you happy with the FX1 for the church lighting?

Chris, What did you end up getting? My studio is looking at getting an EX-1 so I was wondering what you got and if you liked it?
