VX 2000 keeps shutting off and on. HELP Can't Post

I am using a VX 2000 and been shooting on it for several years now. I just bought some new batteries for it, Sony brand, the NP-F 750 and 770s.

The problem is, in my last two wedding shoots, my camera starts acting up, shutting down and re-booting in the middle of shots, or while in pause. It will turn off and turn right back on again. I can't figure this out, and it is really screwing me up. Does anyone have a suggestion on what could be causing this ? I went ahead and switched over to my other VX 2000 for the rest of the reception, and didn't have any problems with that camera.

Does the battery have anything to do with it ? Is there something else that I am missing ? Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Paul

Does it do it when you go back to the old batteries? And can you use the same batteries in your backup camera and have it work fine?

Yes it did it with the older battery as well. The second camera had no problems

It sounds like the problem is common to the camera, not the batteries. Check to make sure good contacts are made with the battery/camera. My PD170 has a little bit of play in the battery (not enough to disconnect, but there IS a little wiggle). If it gets to where a little bump or jiggle can disconnect the power connectors it can power cycle. I don't know if this is the cause, but it seems to be a possibility.

You have a bad power supply unit that must be replaced. It is causing voltage depression when heated. Common problem. Eventually, the camera will not be able to be powered up at all.

It's not the batteries or the power supply. It's the power switch. It's been a known problem with almost all VX cameras. The part is called the switch block control. It'll probably run about $2-300.00 for the repair.

Our tech in the shop always puts a power supply unit in with a switch. I assume, when one goes down, so may the other. Maybe they are attached as a unit. Who knows....in any event it's not his batteries. I still would not discount the rear connectors also. What ya think? Is that possible too?

The rear connectors are possible but unlikley. I've seen those switches go bad many times. As for replacing the DD-38 card,(DC/DC convertor) it's unnesessary. I've never seen one fail. It'll cost an estra $103 for the card, it's not physically attached the switch block in any way plus it would take more time and disassembly to install it. The switch block runs about $48 and would take under an hour to install.

One way to test the battery contacts would be to just plug it in with DC power...that will eliminate the connectors (possibly), but I do not know what common circuitry is used between the direct power and battery, so you may bypass another problem component as well by doing this.

The other guys seem to know quite a bit more about this type of thing than me, though, so.... zzzzziiiiippppp Unimpressed Cool

Hope that is the problem......a cheaper alternative. I had the converter fail on me under SONY WARRANTY, so they do break. I have also observed numerous power supply problems on my own. But let me ask you this....Do they replace the power switch as per the manual? OR.....if the switch goes, do they replace the power supply? Sounds like a good way to make extra bucks. Tantamount when you take your car in for a state inspection and everything gets replaced. Thanks in advance.

I can't speak for other tech's but I wouldn't replace the dc/dc convertor unless it was necessary.
