60i means 60 interlaced frames per second. You put them together and you get 30 actual frames per second, which is standard broadcast rate (what comes from the TV companies on your analog TV). That is why it was designed that way. Quality is a very personal opinion. Some like interlaced footage because it looks "smoother" on an interlaced TV. Others like 24P (progressive, 24 frames/second) because they feel it gives them more of a "film rate" look since 35mm film is shot at 24 frames per second instead of 30 frames per second. What I would look for is a 3CCD camcorder so you have the ability to get good colors (although a few 1ccd/more expensive cameras do well also) that has the main features you are looking for. Also, look at reliability. Sony and Panasonic seem to have a pretty good reliability factor, but research is important.
