capturing video from cannon mv500i camcorder Can't Post

i have a cannon digital video camcorder (mv500i) and it has a DV terminal. I want to transfer the videos from it on my computer to be able to edit them, but i don't know which port do i connect it to on my computer, and what cable do i use? I want to keep the quality as best as i can, so wat do i need to have on my computer? (i have an IBM Netvista with Windows ME) i have video editing software, but do i need some other kind of capturing software?
I am very new at this, so i'd appreciate all the help i can get. Thanx!

You need to have a Firewire (IEEE 1394) port on your computer, and a Firewire cable to connect the two. You may have this port on the back panel, near the USB ports, or on your sound card, or at the front of your computer case. If your computer doesn't have a Firewire port, you can add one with an inexpensive IEEE 1394 capture card, for $20-50.
You should also invest in a second, large, 7200 rpm hard drive. DV video consumes about 18GB per hour of disk space. Get a 60GB or larger drive.
...and next time, please post "how to" questions like this in the Technical Q&A forum, not the Teachers forum. Thanks!
