Canon's 16:9 aspect ratio Can't Post

Does anyone know whether or not the Canon DV cameras offer true 16:9 a.r rather than just a letterbox effect. If the Canons do offer true 16:9 will the viewfinder and LCD screen show an image in the correct a.r or will it be squashed.

The XL1 offers 16:9, and the picture will appear squashed in the viewfinder, or on a 4:3 monitor. It will look normal on a 16:9 monitor. Don't know about the other Canon models...
All of the consumer camcorders offering 16:9 do so by throwing away the top and bottom picture information. Therefore, you will lose some resolution in this mode. True 16:9 capture, with CCDs designed for it, starts with the Sony DSR-500 professional camera.

So you are saying that the XL-1 in 16:9 is really just cutting off the top and bottom of the picture like all of the little cameras that offer the 16:9 Matte effect? I guess I was under the impression that the XL1 was doing something different - but they are doing the same as everyone else and just stretching the image in the viewfinder. Infact, the only time the XL-1 is going to be effective in 16:9 is when (if you can afford it) it is played back on a 16:9 monitor. That kinda stinks.
