DVD Burning Can't Post

I did a video for a couple's 20th anniversary and I've been trying to get the DVD to play on the player (Sony SLV-D300P) for weeks now. I tried every format (-R, +R and a VCD), and despite what the manual said, each one had playback issues.

So then I changed the brand from Sony and Maxell to Taiyo Yuden, because I read here that they were reliable. So today I took them over to the couple's house and we tried again, this time with a Taiyo Yuden +R, because the one that worked the best out of the formats was a +R. Anyway, it didn't work.
The video blinks little pixel-y things and jumps and skips. I came home and tried the disc on my DVD player (which is supposed to play only VCD, but I figured I'd give it a shot.) Amazingly enough, the +R worked, blinky pixel things gone, skips gone, but it still got stuck about half way through.

And SO, I'm wondering if maybe the issue could lie with my DVD burner? Are these symptoms accurate for a burner that's getting ready to bite the dust? My burner is only about a year and a half old, but I have put it to good use. So... any thoughts? Any idea what else I could do? Any input is very much appreciated. Thanks a ton.

What software did you use to transcode to MPEG2, author, and burn to disk? What data rate? What audio encoding? What other settings to encode? What burn speed?

Software was DVD Architect 3.0, burn speed was 8x, audio encoding is AC-3 Stereo... data rate? Forgive my ignorance, but is that the same as bitrate? If so, the bitrate was 2... I think. If not, could you explain further on that? I'm very (very, very) new to DVD Architect, so I may be looking at the wrong thing. My apologies if it's incorrect.

Thank you so much.

Yes, bitrate. Couple of things you can try...
1. Transcode to MPEG2 in Vegas, rather than DVDA. You have more control over the parameters. I like a constant bitrate of about 6 megabits/sec.
2. See Ed Troxel's Vegas newsletters for info on suggested bitrates, and how much material you can get onto a disk at a particular rate.
3. Do a separate "prepare" and "burn" step. This puts the disk image file on the computer's hard disk, and makes the transfer job at burn time very easy on the computer.
3. Burn at a slower speed. Try 2X or 4X.

If it plays in one player and would not play in other, it seems like a player incompatibility problem (some older players would play neither DVD-R nor DVD+R at all).
If you are creating disk image or DVD file structure on your hard drive, and then copy files on the disk, burning procedure may be a problem. Try different burner or blank media, slow down recording speed.

From personal experience may recommend Plextor burner (PowerRec setting) in combination with Maxell blank DVD-R's.

Re: [videobear] DVD Burning [In reply to] Can't Post

I am new to this forum - but found that I am not the only one experiencing a problem with my finished DVD's skipping and pausing when played back on a DVD player. I use Pinnacle Studio 9 for my editing software and was advised to try using the slowest speed for rendering - which I did and the problem still exists. So if I am reading your reply correctly you are advising Kelsie to render the file in MPEG2 - I am currently rendering my DVD's using the Make a Disk option which sounds like it could be my problem.

Any guidance is most appreciated - VHS was much easier to finalize, but such a trade off in the quality of the finished product. Thanks Fran

Pinnacle Studio has an integrated DVD authoring option, so it should be making an MPEG2 file for you automatically.

Many things can cause disk skipping. What brand of media you use is a factor. Bitrate is a factor. Burn rate is a factor. And sometimes, which editing and transcoding software you use can be a factor. Whether the disk has any smudges or fingerprints is a big factor. And sometimes, the DVD player you use just doesn't like DVD-Rs, or possibly just YOUR DVD-Rs.

How long is this video...2 is a very small bitrate..the lowest I will ever go for any kind of quality is 4. At 4 I get about an hour and a half on a 4.7gb disc. If you have an hour...6 is a good bitrate. There are bitrate calculators on the internet if you search. How are you labeling these discs. Once I stopped using stick on labels I never had a playback issue again.
