Digitizing VHS, Do I need a Time Base Corrector? Can't Post

Here's my setup:

S-VHS VCR feeding into my Sony DSR-11 DVCAM deck for the digital conversion and captured into my computer. The problem I am having is the odd frame skips and mosaic blocks in the final DV capture, but the artifacts don't show up when playing back the VHS tapes.

These are home movies edited in-camera, so I think I may have sync issues. Do I need to buy a TBC?

EDIT: I am in the process of converting my entire VHS/SVHS library of home movies to DVD and want the best quality possible.

Are you using the DSR-11 as a pass-through device to convert the analog video to DV, and then capturing it on your hard drive, or are you recording the VHS material to DV tape in the DSR-11?

Either way, I don't think the things you are seeing are sync issues . What you're seeing is either intermittent head clogs in the DVCAM deck (if you're recording to tape), or failures to keep up with the video stream (if you're capturing directly to the computer).

Check things like your capture settings, capture drive read/write speed, etc. and make sure that you don't have programs running in the background eating up computer resources during capture.

I agree with doug... This doesn't sound like Sync issues at all. What kind of Harddrive are you capturing to?
