Reusing MiniDV tapes Can't Post

We have students and staff that have tried to reuse (record over) MiniDV tapes. They wind up with alternating bars showing the old and new footage. Is there a way to wipe these tapes clean so that they can be reused or should the camera do it on the fly?

Re: Reusing MiniDV tapes Can't Post

I almost never reuse tapes, but when I do, I treat them like they're brand new and "stripe" them. Use the manual controls of your camera to close the iris and turn the audio down to zero, then record this. If you just record with the camera in auto with a lens cover and diconnected mic cable, you'll get a very noisy (video and audio) black tape. In theory, this shouldn't matter. I really like to start with a black tape with no audio and with timecode from start to finish.

The problem is not with re-using the tapes. The problem you describe is a head clog in the camera. Run a cleaning tape in the camera per the manufacturer's directions.

I've had this same exact thing happen on the very few times I've re-used tapes. The head shouldn't have been dirty...it was a fairly new camera and the cleaning tape was used regularly. Switching out the tape with a new one fixed the problem immedaitely.

The "pro's" on the forum adamantly say there's nothing wrong with re-using tapes.

Well, this was a very real problem. I think it might have been caused by tapes that were previously recorded with a different camera in LP mode.

It might not have been the tapes fault, but it WAS a problem that arose from re-using tapes.

Poor binding between the tape and metal particles as the tape ages is a very real possibility. I have concerns over magnetic dust, as well.

It's hard to identify the problem without having a look at the tape. I would suggest to manually clean all the heads, not only the drum head.

To completely get rid of an old signal use degausser (bulk eraser), check here:

There are cheaper ones in RadioShack, good for VHS tapes, but not strong enough for the digital ones.

Reusing tapes, especially digital ones is normal. The broadcasters are re-using tapes for years, probably for at least a hundred run until the tape gets out of rotation.

We have also had this happen and just on used tapes, never on new.

I also stripe the tapes... I do not worry to much about the perfect black black but it seems to tension the tape well and put timecode on it.

As soon as you stripe the tape, it's now "Used". Why waste the time and tape heads? If you want to tension it, just fast forward/rewind.

Tape "tension" has nothing to do with how the tape is wound in the cassette. "Tape tension" in your camera or deck is controled ONLY after the tape has emerged from the cassette by the capstan and guides. Tape is never exactly even in tension on the reels of a cassette once it is run through any cam/deck the first time. You could loosly coil the tape in a bucket on the floor and the cam/deck would not care so long as it was fed straight into the capstan/pinch roller.
As Ed stated, blacking a tape is no different in terms of 'used/re-use' than recording a kids birthday party.

I guess I'm always amazed at some of the urban legends and/or old wives' tales concerning video, especially with what one should or shouldn't do with video tapes. It's almost like a superstition, but as with that, if it makes you feel good and doesn't really do any harm, why worry about it.

I just try to take a more logical/financial approach to these things.

Re: [X-bcig] Reusing MiniDV tapes [In reply to] Can't Post

We have had some similiar problems. At the university that I work at, we have Canon Optura 20s for students and faculty to check out. Sometimes we have problems with new tapes, but many more problems with used. What we found was not to stripe the tape, but "pack" the tape. Those of you that have been around for many years might remember having to do this with 3/4". Basically put the tape in your camera, fast forward it all the way and then rewind it all the way. This sets the tension on the tape to what the camera likes, plus it helps to align the tape to "that" camera's heads. By doing this, we have almost zero problems with our Canon's. The biggest problem with check out cameras, is that you end up having too many different brands of tape in the camera. We don't have a policy of using a certain brand on our check-out cameras. Not all cameras are made alike, for example I can't play anything shot with my Canon GL-1 in my Sony TRV-900 or vice versa. I get artifacts on playback every time. It's a head alignment issue. There is no hard fast rule. You can have problems with new tapes just as easy as with used tapes, that is just a fact. Although, the chances are slimmer with new tapes. Personally, for my freelance stuff, I almost always use new tapes for my main camera, and then used for back-up camera or cameras. I normally only use a tape twice for a job, then it goes into my "Tapes for Family use" box. That is just the way I feel comfortable.
Try the packing thing, I bet you'll see a difference. Also I always tape around 1 min or so of black at the beginning of my tapes. Most problems will happen at the beginning of the tape.

Cheers,

I never reuse my tapes, ever! They're so cheap, why bother? However, if I was going to this is the way I'd do it.
