Sony Digit. Camcorder TRV9 --> FireWire Can't Post

I'd like to hook my Sony TRV9 digit. camcorder up to my laptop, to save videos as mpegs or whatever (streaming video, not snapshots). My laptop (Gateway) doesn't have a FireWire port, but there are pcmcia (pc-) cards with FireWire connectors.
The one that I have seen on the Sony website is very expensive ($650), and mentions something to the effect that only stills can be captured. I want to use the digital out (firewire) to transfer videos to my laptop and subsequently burn them on cds.
Can someone please help me out here ?
Thanks,
Pete
