Sony Digital Super 8-DCR TRV 103 Can't Post

Does any one know if this item requires any type of video card? I just want to use the still images on my computer and I'm afraid I will need to buy a firewire card and chord. I have recieved mix answers on the subject.
There has been a message posted for the SONY TRV-500 series but the camera I am thinking of purchasing is TRV-103.

The Sony Digital 8 camera line uses the iLink, or IEEE 1394 (Firewire) interface for digital video transfer, just like the DV cameras. Only the physical format of the tape is different.
To get video (or stills) from this camera into your computer, you will either need a computer with a builtin Firewire port, or a Firewire data transfer card.

The SONY Digital 8 series of camcorders has RCA jacks for video in and out. If you have an existing RCA compatible jack card on your PC, you will not need a firewire card unless you wnt the best possible resolution. The RCA jacks were designed to "talk" to VCRs. I don't have a Digital 8 (yet), but I have a SONY ES-970 that uses the RCA jacks. If you don't have the RCA jack card on your PC, I would recommend getting a firewire card instead of buying older RCA jack technology.

Re: Sony Digital Super 8-DCR TRV 103 [In reply to] Can't Post

I just recently purchased a Digital 8 DCR TRV 103 camera and I amquite unfamiliar with the peripherals required to connect to my PC.
Very little was explained in the manual and I was wondering if someone is able to clarify everything a little bit for me.
First of all, where would I get the iLink and what kind of port do I need in my computer? About how much would I be spending here?
I also called the Sony Corp. hotline and one of its operators said that I would need a "capture card" installed into my PC which costs around $600.
What's the deal?
Your input to this matter is greatly appreciated.
Please e-mail me whenever time permits.
SIncerely,
Jimmy M.

I NEED THE IEEE 1394 WIRE TO GO FROM MY CAMERA TO MY COMPUTER, I HAVE LOOKED EVERYWHERE, AND NO ONE HAS ANY ACCESSORIES THAT HAVE THE WIRE. IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE I CAN GET ONE, IT WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

Beware of the cheaper firewire cards- they may not allow you to do digital video editing like the cards from Canopus can!

I bought mine at eBay. Try going to the homepage, www.ebay.com, then select "Photo & Electronics" then "Video Equipment". Search for "Sony" and you will get hundreds of results. Browse through there for all the accessories for your Digital8 camcorder.

Re: Sony Digital Super 8-DCR TRV 103 [In reply to] Can't Post

Hmmm...first off, you don't need to buy an i.Link cable since they are rather expensive. What you need to buy is a firewire cable or IEEE 1394 compliant (firewire) cable is the correct term. Second you have to buy a 4 pin to 6 pin firewire cable especially if you are editing on a desktop/tower pc system. If you are working on a laptop, you need to make what type of connector you have for your firewire video capture card. Sony laptops use a 4 pin connector so your firewire cable will be a 4 pin to 4 pin cable. I have a TRV 103 as well as a Sony Laptop but I'm building a Desktop system for video editing. I bought the Pinnacle firewire capture card for $89 (includes shipping)from www.ubid.com. It came with a 4 pin to 6 pin cable as well as Studio DV software. Firewire cables can be bought at any computer super store. Sony i.link cables are like $40 and I bought my 25 foot 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable for like $12 and it works fine with my laptop. One thing you should know... the TRV 103 has problems being recognized by Sony Laptop DV capture software so you probably won't be able to use the existing software on a sony laptop for dv capture. I'm using Ulead Studio Pro 6 and it has no problems inputting and outputting back to the TRV 103 camera on my sony laptop.
