Conversion has failed...AVCHD Can't Post

Tried transcoding footage from a Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 6 card and only half the card transcoded.
Got this error message: 'Conversion has failed (bad stream or unexpected packet) when using Edius AVCHD2HQ converter.
Luckily it was just test footage but it's scary because only 2GB of the 16GB transcoded.
I was using Canopus AVCHD2HQ conversion software but the same clip would not export from the Edius timeline either.
I could preview it as AVCHD but could not convert it.
I've since formatted that card and recorded a full 98 minutes again and it works now...so it's not the card.
Not sure why that 1 recording out of 4 went bad????

Not sure here either as I'm not yet messing with AVCHD files. If I can't figure a problem out I always check the Edius forums on the GV site. That place has lots of gurus including a couple of Canopus people involved. I get lots of answers and ideas there. I always check the forums once a day to see if something new is happening.

I just checked the forums yesterday only to discover version 5.1 is out for free download to registered users. Couple of nice improvements in it like bluray authoring right off the timeline. There is also a fix to the 4gb file stitching problem. I know there was a small utility that fixed that but it is part of the full update now.

I am starting my first project with 5.1 now. Can't wait to try a few new things out.

You should have tried something like Neo Scene (trial version) before you recorded over the card. Then you'd know if it was a problem with Edius or something else.

I'm using Edius 5.1 on a 3 ghz Quad duo core HP. So far ... very stable. I get a 127 real-time buffer with full HD.
When I tried to add the latest patch fix to get Edius5 to start up quicker...started getting playback errors so I set it back.

Probably would have been a good idea to try it using Neo Scene.

Other thing that may have caused an error was possibly capturing cards simultaneously? I used a USB card reader and the HP built in media card reader to capture two cards at once. I'd feel a lot better knowing the exactly why that one card of footage was unreadable. Diving in this weekend....hope it all works as it should.

This is the main thing that scares me the most about a tapeless workflow.
While yes, tapeless is much faster to get into your system for editng, tape, while slower has the potential for less problems. As if you hvae a prob;em during shooting with tape, you might only have a dropout, but if you have aproblem with a SD/CF card during shooting or capture, yu ahve the great potential to get nothing.

Foe me the best workflow is having the ability to do both, shoot tape and shoot card media. Thsi way I ahve tape for backup and acrhival and card based for wuick editing.

Hi Brian,

I'm not sure I follow you. If the conversion failed, just try it again. Did you copy the AVCHD files over to your hard drive and convert from there or were you converting straight from the card?

Brian, converted about 10 weddings and have had no problems at all, using the same set up as you, some strange fluke I think.

Got a link, I signed in and went to the usual place, but don't see it. Everything has changed with the GV logo and other stuff. Thanks, as usual Froggie Smile Steve

I think you are using version 5.01. There was a patch for that to load it quicker. It had to do with the VST plugin. There is a new version 5.1 version available on the GV site now. That's the one with a few new features that will be sweet to have like bluray authoring off the timeline. Check your version. I think you are on 5.01.

Yes, I copied it from the card to hard drive first and then transcoded it from the hard drive.
I then tried it from the Edius timeline and it still failed. I've since recorded 3 more full 16GB cards and they all worked fine. Hopefully it was just some fluke thing that will never happen again.

Hi Brian,

Since you have the AVCHD files on your hard drive, just try to encode them again and see what happens. I realize a hard drive could have a bad sector, which is why I back up my cards to three hard drives before dumping the footage.

You are correct...it is 5.01...thanks for the info on the 5.1 version.
Are bluray drives easy to install like regular dvd burners??? I should have included it when I ordered the tower but opted for the regular lightscribe burner instead. Wasn't panning on offering bluray but since I'm dealing with all this full HD footage now...may as well.

Re: [daMoaks] Conversion has failed...AVCHD [In reply to] Can't Post

Yup....they are just as easy. The only thing is most bluray drives are SATA connections instead of the old IDE connections. You should be able to just plug it into a spare SATA connector on the motherboard and it should work.

I have pondered getting an external USB 5.25 drive enclosure and putting it in there so I can have my bluray burner on whatever computer I need it on. So far I haven't needed it in multiple places. I just have an old dual core dedicated to encoding and burning only.
