Is your business email address being blocked by yahoo, from your potential customers? Can't Post

In the past, I've noticed I never hear back from a substantial number of clients. No problem, as I figure that's just typical.

I also used to get a substantial amount of junk mail, which I deleted haphazardly in bulk. Now I think among all that junk mail were some legit notifications that email replies to potential clients were being blocked by Yahoo.

I finally realized it because clients that do book with me, eventually stop being able to get emails from me, and start calling to ask why they never hear back from me. Upon checking, it turns out they're all Yahoo users.

For you Yahoo users, does Yahoo allow 1-2 emails from the real outside world, before requiring the Yahoo user adding your email to their Address Book? Or am I just being blocked because my emails eventually say/contain something that is filtered as spam?

This really sucks....no telling how many potential clients I have lost because of Yahoo. Many inquiries say "please email me instead of calling", but now I'll know to call them anyways if they actually provide their call-back number. Crazy

Anyways....just thought it might be something others might want to check out, to make sure it's not happening to them. Otherwise, I hope everyone is having a great holiday! I'm still trying to get a couple of weddings delivered by xmas.....I guess I didn't make it. Sly

Rusty,

I am not sure that is the case with Yahoo. I use Yahoo for my personal email and for my web hosting so email sent from and to my web domain goes through Yahoo. From the amount of spam I get everyday, I don't think Yahoo is blocking anything. They do have a "bulk" folder that some obvious spam gets routed to, but I still have to go in and delete it.

Feel free to send me email if you want to test it.

Good to see you back on VU

It could be that I'm blacklisted or something, since I know my .com's have been "spoofed" in the return address of spammers in the past. However, it's wierd that some emails will make it through once or twice sometimes, and then start being blocked after that.

It could also be my webhost...Lunarpages. That wouldn't surprise me. I don't trust them anymore since they started parking advertising pages, designed to look like MY website, on my 404 pages...which I had to manually fix with help from Daniel Runyon.

I'm not much of a computer wiz, so maybe someone could tell me what this means:

Quote

.....
Delay reason: SMTP error from remote mail server after initial connection:
host f.mx.mail.yahoo.com [209.191.88.247]: 421 Message from (209.200.229.120) temporarily deferred - 4.16.50. Please refer to
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/defer/defer-06.html
No action is required on your part. Delivery attempts will continue for some time, and this warning may be repeated at intervals if the message remains undelivered. Eventually the mail delivery software will give up, and when that happens, the message will be returned to you.

The link provided by Yahoo sends me straight to the "abuse" page. Mad

Probably doesn't have anything to do with your situation, but I was stumped for awhile when I stopped hearing from people after I emailed them. Turns out I had to go into my Powweb account and free up space allocated for email only. Folks were getting the emails bounced back as undeliverable.

Don't know how all that works, but I do know that brides that have a Yahoo or Hotmail address have major problems receiving my contracts in a pdf.

Reply from my hosting provider, Lunarpages, about Yahoo blocking emails:

Quote

Reply:
Hello,
I'm sorry for the delayed response, the ticket was inadvertently filtered into our spam desk.
We are sorry for this inconvenience.
We have done numerous tests on this issue with many of our servers and we found that this is an intermittent issue that we cannot prevent. The email being sent from our servers is being sent correctly and Yahoo is deferring them at random, with no warning or notification.
We have no control over yahoos incoming smtp server's capabilities or policies.
Yahoo is deciding to defer messages coming from not only our shared servers, but any shared server hosting multiple domains.
We urge you to contact yahoo on this issue as they may provide you with additional support and information on the issue, although this is unlikely.
Please do not re-send your email as this will result in more of a delay and will result in more connections to Yahoos servers and will result in the deferred error messages.
In addition, ensure that any mailing list you have is updated to ensure there are no yahoo users who do not want your email. this will help reduce unwanted smtp connections on yahoos end.
As well, if you have forwarders in place pointing to Yahoo addresses, please remove them as they are forwarding spam to yahoo, causing more unwanted connections.
The following links are VERY helpful in getting answers to the questions you have and explanations on the issue from a wide range of users with different isps and webhosts:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/abuse/abuse-60.html
http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061024160658AAAh0QY
As well, I googled 'Yahoo temporarily deferred' and found a wealth of information relating to the topic. You may wish to do this as there may be more information out there that you wish to see.
Note that you may want to consider an upgrade to a dedicated server plan or the virtual private server plan, on which your email service would not be affected by any other user, only email coming from your domains would be coming from your server.
The plans can be reviewed at:
http://www.lunarpages.com/dedicated-hosting/
and
http://www.lunarpages.com/virtual-private-server/
I understand this isnt a solution or correction to the issue, but I can only offer suggestions advice and information as Yahoo chooses to defer these messages from shared servers at random.
We appreciate your understanding of the matter.
Please don't hesitate to get in touch, should you require further assistance.
Kind Regards,

So today I finally gave in to Yahoo, and got a Yahoo email account. What else can you do, if half your potential customers are using Yahoo??? Yahoo kinda has you by the chestnuts. From what I've read on the internet, they're doing this to a LOT of web hosting providers. Now I have to keep track of email in two different places all day...because I didn't have ENOUGH work to do already. Laugh

Hey Rusty:

I have some experience with this. I used to do mailings like this at my old job.

there is not much you can do. it;s just their spam policies. if they are receiving an email for the first time - from someone new - it has a good chance of being spam.

i have a list of over 1,000 potential brides from a recent bridal show and i emailed them once but my feeling is that the majority went to the spam box. I did get some replies but not many and it's because of this issue.

i did some research yesterday and i signed up with an account at iContact.com. check them out. it makes mass mailings a lot easier. they provide feedback/reports on how many emails were received, opened, etc. however i found one problem today: they didn't approve my mailing because i need to show that each bride "opted-in" to receive my email. otherwise to them it's just spam. i understand their point. i am trying to resolve this with them.

they have some cool tools you can use to make your mailing "not spam like." at least with this service you will get reports which can be very helpful.

regards,

robert

Re: [RustyB] Is your business email address being blocked by yahoo, from your potential customers? [In reply to] Can't Post

If I get my emails be way of online then most of the emails will go to the spam or bulk mail folders and I have to go through them all and flag the ones that are not spam or bulk.

If I get my emails with Outlook Express then I get all of them including all of the spam. Then I have to spend time deleting all of the junk.

Your clients may not realize that if they get their emails online that they need to go through the spam/bulk folders to flag what isn't spam. They are probably assuming that because it is sent to the spam/bulk folders that it is actually spam/bulk and they don't need to look in those folders.

By the way, on one of my email addresses it is called the 'spam' folder and the other email addresses it is called the 'bulk' folder. I am not 100% sure why they do that...

Anyway, it is best to tell your clients to look in those spam/bulk folders and flag the emails from you as not being spam/bulk so in the future they will be sure to get them.

This is the problem with filters. They have the tendency to remove more than what you want. I even found some very important emails in the spam folder. So I go the safe route and use Outlook Express and get all of them and then filter them myself.

Note: It is possible to setup subfolders for certain types of emails that you want and then use the mail rules (or whatever they call it) to direct the emails to the proper folders. I do that with emails from forums I subscribe to.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, that's what I've seen since I signed up for Yahoo Mail yesterday. I sent myself a test message from my .com mail, to my Yahoo mail, and it went into the "bulk" mail folder, which is called "spam" folder in the "classic" mail view. So I went in there and marked it as "not spam"....maybe that will help get me un-blacklisted. Cool

This is a huge problem with being on a shared server. From what I understand, it is the IP address of the server that can cause you problems. So if you are on a server with other sites that spam or even send out a large number of emails, the whole server gets blacklisted, not just the offending site.

I ran into this problem with a client recently. He switched to a dedicated email hosting solution. They charge a monthly fee but most of them have a "guarantee" that your emails will get through.

Yep...and Lunarpages is so popular, you know there's TONS of spammers using it to send out crap. That's why the Lunarpages support dude's solution was for me to buy a dedicated server with them. Laugh Yeah, right. My "business" is so small, instead of a server, you could probably host it on an iPod from the back booth at Starbucks. Laugh

This sucks...I REALLY need to ditch Lunarpages when I get the cash, and try using another cheap shared server host, to see if I have better luck. I can't afford a dedicated server. Yahoo is still blocking some of my email.

ANOTHER lost sale...I got this a MONTH after replying to an inquiry....

Hi, Rusty,

I'm so sorry that I'm just responding to your email. Somehow your message made its way to my spam folder and I just caught it as I was deleting my spam. Unfortunately, I have already booked a videographer, but I do appreciate your response.

Thank you for your time,

I'm thinking of moving to HostGator.com , after reading a bunch reviews and pricing on the internet for different hosts.

Question....they have a "dedicated IP" option for a couple extra bucks per month on their cheap shared hosting plan. Theoretically, shouldn't that solve the problem of being blacklisted by Yahoo? (Unless I spam Yahoo.) There's no telling how much business I'm losing because of Yahoo's spam policy, so $2 a month extra would be well worth it!

Yup...I did the same thing.

Considering I might be losing many thousands of dollars worth of bookings per year because of Yahoo's spam filters, a dedicated server could almost be justified. However, there HAS to be a smarter option.

My entire website is only 300kb...it's just like 5 html pages of plain black text on a plain white background!!! I'm a one-man "business"...not Amazon.com...I shouldn't need a dedicated server!!

After next months rent is magically paid, I guess I'll try that $2/month "dedicated IP address" option at HostGator.com, and see if it has an impact. I'll post my results here, if anyone is interested. I wouldn't know what to do if I wasn't throwing money at one problem or another in this business on a regular basis. Laugh

I had the same problem with others... comcast mainly.. from what I understand, it's probably because whoever you host with has a bunch of spammers.. some may even be on your server if you are shared. There is a form for most companies to get unblocked.. with comast it usually took a couple hours.. very frustrating..

I know this is an older topic but this just started happening for me. Mad
I'm getting returned back all my e-mails to yahoo clients.
The message I get is something like "temporarily deferred" due
to seeming to be spam.

What can I do about this? Has anyone found a way to straighten this
out? I am not sending spam or anything like it. What to do now
as a lot of my clients are on yahoo e-mail?

I dumped Lunarpages and switched to a cheap shared plan at http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml . Not only do my emails not get canned as spam anymore (as far as I know), my website no longer vanishes all the time, Outlook doesn't fail periodically when checking email, and my site seems to load a lot faster.

I've been using them for like 8 months, and have had zero issues with anything...website or email. I'm paying monthly at $9.95, but it gets cheaper if you pay for years in advance.
