Tax Time: Haircut deductible? Can't Post

Can visits to the beauty salon be deducted as a business expense?
If so, what category would this be under?

You can deduct anything you want as a business deduction. IRS may disagree, and you could then have some additional expense.

If you didn't have to get a haircut for personal reasons, you could argue that it is a business expense. But, because you would have to get a haircut (presumably) anyway, it wouldn't be deductible.

I couldn't deduct trash service, because my business doesn't add much to the yield and I need trash removal for my home anyway. However, I am deducting part of my water and other utility bills, since they are increased by operating my business in my home. I did have to convince my accountant that, because I am at home all day (relative to my prior job outside my house) and have customers in, I flush that toilet a lot more now. Sly

I had the beautician take off a few inches. It makes for a more
professional appearance if the hair doesn't go past the belt.

THis is perfectly acceptable. THere is a home office deduction that you can get. You figure out how many square feet of your house are being used for business and figure the percentage of your total square feet. This percentage of your utilities is then deductible. There are tax implications that I don't fully understand if you sell your house. You should ask your accountant about that.

I have wondered though if you were set up as a S-Corp or a regular corp instead of LLC or sole proprietorship if things like gym memberships and other stuff could be written off the company books as benefits paid to employess. If you are setup as a corporation this may be an option. Just a thought based on what Chris asked above.

Yeah, Allan, I guess that would be the argument, that I need the haircut to maintain a professional appearance, so regular haircuts are essentially a requirement of the job. It seems to make sense. I think.

That's what we're doing, but he feels you need to provide some logic related to the business. You don't get to deduct the full percentage; there are some other mumbo-jumbo percentages thrown in, but it did save me a few hundred dollars. You can also include your home insurance. Hmm, I didn't ask him about yard maintenance...

We've been in our house for 36 years, and I will certainly end this business before we ever sell.

Not all of it! Just that portion in excess of what you would have done otherwise...and I thought you were already maxed out. Crazy

BE CAREFUL with the home office deduction. There is a rule in place that says you cannot use the deduction if it moves you from what would have been a year-end profit into a net operating loss. I got caught on this about 10 years ago (not knowing back then about this rule) and had an I.R.S. audit...ended up paying about $2000 more. Mad

Re: [MarshallM] Tax Time: Haircut deductible? [In reply to] Can't Post

I have an accountant that does my taxes and keeps me informed of that stuff. It would be hard for us to post a loss for the year since this is really our only income and our expenses are way less than we bring in. Not that we bring that much but when you pay yourself by moving money to a personal account it is pretty hard to show a loss. At least it has been for me. I may not be making boatloads but I am living on the money so we are profitable. My accountant does tell me about those issues when I meet with her but that is a great warning for others. I could actually claim even more of my house than I do but I don't want to set off red flags.

I deducted a suit this year as a uniform for business...No need for a suit as I normally wear jeans boots and a polo for everything except weddings...maybe a gym membership could work as healthcare???

I think clothes that you would use only for work - suit, tux, dress
shoes, tie - would be deductible.

Yeah the way I came up with the idea was because my wife deducts her scrubs on the taxes...so I figured the same applied for my suit which I only wear for work

Yes, this is correct - there's generally a limit, but attire, certain appearance elements, such as specific makeup for being on tv, for instance, can all be deducted. Haircuts, though, are something that you'd do regardless, but if it's a specific haircut, color, or whatever else, then there's more of a backing to it.

Perhaps if you cut enough off to donate to a hair related charity, but not as a business expense.
