I have the Canon WD-58 (0.7) and love it. Great image, zoom-through capabilities, but heavy!

I also have the Century Precision Optics reversible (0.55) and fish eye. It is nice and light, great quality also, but shows every little speck on the lens. Almost impossible to keep usuably clean - especially when outside.

Raynox 0.3x fisheye here also but I've only toyed with it. There's two flavors of this type of lens. One snaps on which is a bit cheaper but always looks like it could "flop" off the cam if bumped. I opted for the screw mount.

I also use the Sony X0.7 VCL-HG0758 WA lens. Does fine but I only use it in tight enclosures set to fully wide - rarely zoomed.

Why would any type of glass be harder to keep clean than another?

Canon WD-58 (wide angle - w/zoom through - an all day tool, save for extended long distance shots). Note, it will soften your image ever-so-slightly. But the advantages it gives far out weigh the softening.

Raynox Clip On (fish eye)

Raynox clip on reason: my shooting style never intends for it to be on for more than a few minutes (attended). I get effect shots with it during prep/scenery/establishing shots... controlled shooting.

The upside to the clip on... fast! It does exactly what it says... clips on. No screwing, no lining up threads (or striping them if in a hurry).

Both models are fine (I've seen them). I just prefer the speed the clip on affords me. And yes, flying my camera over a wedding cake with the Raynox Clip On Fish... it can be nerve racking. But I can say... knock on wood... I've never had one come off. I've even bumped it hard. The result being one side dislodges, but the lense has always stayed put. Not nearly as solid as a threaded model, but it hangs on to the camera pretty well.

The Century Optics (another option) are extremely good glass, but the price break... it's pretty steep. Your client will never know the difference. I'd go Raynox for Fish and Canon WD-58 for wide.

Thanks,
Oscar

Because of the extreme depth of field, every little speck is very noticeable.

Yeah, I got to thinking about that after I posed the question. More optical surface area too. Makes sense.

And I don't care how clean I "think" my glass is. I've yet to have a perfectly clear image in direct sunlight.

Is this the snap-on fisheye you guys are talking about? I like the idea of easy on, easy off.

Yep, that's the one. Mine is a little fuzzy around the perimeter, but it gets the job done for the effect and field of view.

By the way, if you decide to buy from B&H, click through the ad banner above. It'll benefit VU.

Hi RT,

Here's the trick to getting a clean looking image when shooting into the sun. Use the max ND filter. If your iris is not down around 2.0-2.8, then increase your shutter speed so you can open your iris up. It will make the depth of field so shallow that the specs on the lens are not visable.

Hey, good tip (and makes sense). I use the ND filter but will play with the iris/shutter speed.
